Two female new friends who are opening a giftAs people age, they often think that they do not have the time to make new friends, and that they are doomed to live a lonely existence. However, this is not the case. Many senior citizens find that some of their most loyal friends are those that they make at this stage in their life. For those who are wondering just how they can make new friends, there are several ways to make this happen:

1. Join Communities

There are several communities that are designed for those who are senior citizens. These communities have apartments that people can rent and thus enjoy the company of other senior citizens who are living here as well. This is not always an option for some people, but for those who are considering one of these retirement communities, they are going to find that it is easy to make new friends.

2. Volunteer your Time

Several places throughout a city ask for volunteers, and this is a great way to meet new people. Many seniors, even though they are elderly and retired, still volunteer their time at hospitals or schools. They are going to find that they are not only going to meet other volunteers who may be at the same age as they are, but they can also have a meaningful experience in doing this.

3. Visit a Senior Center

Most every city has a senior center that is open to all senior citizens to come and join in on the festivities. These centers may offer game nights, movie nights, and the like. It is an effort to allow seniors to find something to do with their time and meet others who may have the same interests that they have. Many seniors who do go to these groups often find friends that are similar in taste and they develop life long friendships.

These are just three options that is going to allow you to meet new people. However, you have to be open to the experience. The following are a few tips that are going to help you to be out there in order to be open to new people:

– Always be yourself, as this is the only way that you can truly make a friend who has the same interests.
– Be open to new ideas, meaning that you should try something new and exciting.
– Do not limit yourself as you could be a valuable friend to someone.
– Reach out and get to know someone. Instead of waiting for people to come to you, you should go to them in order to get to know them.

Making new friends as you age is not hard, and if you are honest with yourself, you can find friends that you never knew you could have. The main aspect to remember is to be open to friendships however they come your way, whether these are with someone that a child thought you would be interested in, or someone that you meet at the grocery store.
