As a person ages, they are going to find that some things that they once ate are going to be off limits. The digestive system gets a bit more sensitive as a person ages, which is nothing to be concerned about. However, it does mean that a person needs to know what foods are going to be easy on their stomachs and what foods are going to cause problems. There is no reason that a person should feel pain in their stomach due to the food that they have eaten. There are several things to keep in mind when you are looking for foods that are easy to digest, it is best to know what not to eat to narrow this list down.
You do not want to eat anything that is mint or spicy as these have been shown to make it worse for a person who has digestive issues. In addition, avoid anything that has caffeine as caffeine can naturally cause stomach irritations and digestive issues. Alcohol and sugary drinks or snacks also need to be avoided. Alcohol has tons of sugar in it and this in combination with other sugary products can make for some awful digestive issues.
Once you know what you cannot eat, you need to know the rules of what you can eat:
- Simplicity is the key. The more simple a food is, the more likely that this is going to good for you and not cause problems.
- Stick to only eating one or two foods at a time, which can be hard at many occasions, but the less different foods you have, the less likely you are to have issues later.
With these rules being known, there are several foods that are known to be easy to digest, these include:
- Bread
- Rice
- Squash
- Banana
- Scrambled Eggs
- Carrots
- Soup
- Vegetables that are cooked
- Mushrooms
- Peaches
You will also want to ensure that you are getting plenty of fiber in your diet to ensure that your digestive track stays as it should. However, be careful as too much fiber can cause bloating and irritation within the stomach.
If you find that these easy to digest foods are still not helping with your problem, then it may be time to seek the help of a doctor. There are several stomach issues that can cause digestion to be off, and these issues usually have to be remedied with medications or the like. It is normal to not be able to eat the same kinds of foods that you once ate as you age. However, you should not be in severe pain or feel as though everything you eat is causing stomach issues.
You will know when it is time to see a doctor as the changes in diet are not going to help. However, for those who are just suffering from minor problems, changing their diet to easy to digest foods can be the best decision that they ever make. Remember, as our body ages our digestive changes and we must adapt our foods to our new digestive state.
